Clotho Trust
Weavers of Change Foundation
Our foundation is a grantmaking entity based in Singapore, named after Clotho, one of the three fates in Greek mythology. The fates were seen to determine the fate of all people, implying that one’s destiny was largely out of one’s control, and even the gods themselves were bound by the will of the fates. Out of the three fates, Clotho, the weaver of the thread of life, was the one that made major decisions: when someone was born, and when someone would pass away, in effect controlling their lives.
We seek to change people’s lives for the better, rather than leave it to fate or to the circumstances one was born in, by focusing on:
- Longevity research – We believe the current way medicine is administered is not effective. Large amounts of money are spent in extending the last decade of a person’s life (lifespan), irrespective of the quality (healthspan). Too many elderly people are kept alive while in wheelchairs or bound to hospital beds, at tremendous cost to the family and governments, while enduring significant suffering. The governments’ paths in healthcare spending for the aging population is not sustainable. We are actively involved in funding healthy longevity research and new interventions via scientific research so that we can live not just longer, but healthier and leading more active lives in our last decade.
- Human trafficking/Modern Slavery – Once you right to choose how you wish to live is taken away from you, nothing else matters, regardless of education, job opportunities and health. We are actively involved in finding and minimising (hopefully eventually eradicating) the sources of human trafficking/modern slavery in Asia.
- University education for poor Asian girls – We actively fund university programs for sectors that benefit the community, like doctors, for young poor girls in Asia, where in many places there is still an old-fashioned thinking that when resources are limited, the boys are raised to have an education while the girls are raised to become housewives and only produce children.
